Teeny’s feet were killing her.

She’d spent many good years molding her size sixes to slip easily into a pair of seven hundred dollar designer pumps and endure hours of walking around on stilt-like heels. Sashaying on heels was second nature to her. In fact, her feet were so used to the torture of four inch spikes, that she often felt unnatural in flats. The anguish she subjected her feet to was all part of maintaining a high society image.

That was before she ended up pregnant.

The dress she had on now worked with a less murderous pair of shoes. Teeny would have done herself an even bigger injustice if she’d let her brand new pair of Yves Saint Laurent pumps lay unnoticed in her closet. Besides, she’d bought them specifically to go with her white, beaded-embroidered cocktail dress. And every woman knew accessories were just as important as the dress.

When she’d first received the invitation to attend the gala dinner Darren and Priscilla Price were throwing, she thought about going with some other evening gown she’d worn a dozen times. Then she saw this knee length, short-sleeved Oscar de la Renta and decided to splurge almost six thousand dollars for it. Under normal circumstances Teeny looked for something half the price but then she thought what the hell. She was pregnant and wouldn’t be able to wear things like this for much longer. She planned on enjoying her skinny body – what was left of it – while she still could. That and the fact she knew she couldn’t squeeze her expanding waist into any of her size two dresses.

So splurge she would. For one more evening she’d continue to hide her condition and her affair from her parents. Although she always heard mothers had some weird way of sensing when another woman was pregnant. Keeping that in mind, Teeny managed to stay out of the general vicinity of her mother and father since she’d walked through the door. Thirty minutes had passed. Her mother knew she’d be there so Teeny would have to announce her presence sooner or later.

A mustached, white tuxedoed waiter walked with a tray of Champagne in crystal flutes. The champagne called out to her. It was the second time she’d almost reached out for the bubbly liquid before she remembered not to drink alcohol. She had an increasingly difficult time giving up things she enjoyed like coffee and wine. If it hadn’t been for Landon, the man who’d put her in this position, to remind her of such things, her baby would probably grow a third eyeball.

Get real, Teeny. There’s no such thing as third eyeballs.

Not only was she overly paranoid, but also she didn’t know squat about kids. She’d never in her life changed a diaper, didn’t know anything about calming a crying baby and her skin crawled at the thought of breast feeding. Teeny Newbury was what the rest of the country called a Trust Fund Baby. Families of her stature hired nannies and in-home nurses to take care of the dirty work.
